Back To Classics

For fashionholics, one of the funnest thing about flipping through Sept. issues of magazines are the new FW07 ads. As we all know, magazine ads usually focus on marketing products from the seasonal collection, especially the ‘it’ bags. All the products come from one collection and have a common theme. But interestingly this season, Prada and Louis Vuitton, both huge bag sellers, have dedicated one or two campaign images to their classic bags.

se the bags are just so classic -not matter what, these classic bags fit in surprisingly well with the seasonal clothes. I mean, look at this Prada ad, even with the artistic and somewhat weird clothes Prada has this season, the bags still seem to belong there. The puffed up messenger bags totally fit in with Prada’s intelligent, artsy image.

As for the Louis Vuitton ad, the classic monogrammed bag fits in really well with the whole posh, well-dressed, high-maintanence woman image. (For once, I’ll refrain from ranting about how much I dislike celebs posing in high fashion ads. Sigh…) Even after looking at this uber-glam ad, I still don’t feel the urge to buy this monogrammed bag, although to be fair, I’m not a fan of obviously-monogrammed bags. Oops, now I’m ranting about monogrammed bags.Anyhow, classic bags seem to be getting a push from large brands this season. Are the execs hoping more people would fish out money for their classic bags, or is this a nod to the late 80′s/ early 90′s trend? No matter what, at least you know if you buy these classic bags, they won’t be particularly ‘out’ next season!
Rock the Black Blazer

I love love love blazers. My very first staple outerwear was a black blazer. Although I now realise it was a bit too big on me, my love for blazers never died. I now own other blazers, like a washed-out yellow one and a purple velvet one. But the one I really want is THE perfect black blazer, so I’m on a hunt.
Meanwhile, I thought I would share my recent favourite way to wear it. Actually, it was the only outfit I wore during my last Christmas holidays: Skinny/straight leg jeans, a flowy long top with a blazer. It’s simple yet looks so cool (love Sienna’s outfit here). The blazer adds structure to the not-so-structured flowy top. And if you only wear black, grey and white, then you achieve a rock chick look like Lindsay here.
Blazers are also great for casual outfits, (for some reasons, people seem to be stuck with the idea that blazers are formal,) which is why I love it when Ashley wears it. Here are a few styling ideas from Ashley’s outfits: you can try rolling up the sleeves and adding a colourful scarf to make the outfit look more casual (and warm). Blue jeans will of course, get you the more casual look, but black jeans feel cooler and edgier.OK, I should stop blabbering about how much I love blazers and spend more time looking for my perfect black one, (or ideally many many ones).
The Most Expensive Handbags

You’d think that the birkins of the world were already expensive enough, but no, savvy designers just keep on coming up with even more extravagant creations to top the last one. Topping the Forbes list of the most extravagant bags in the world this year was not the Hermes Birkin*gasp*.
The honor this time around goes to Chanel (ah the ever business savvy Karl), with this “Diamond Forever” bag worth $ 260,150USD. This limited edition classic Chanel shoulder bag (there is only 13!) is made of alligator skin with 334 diamonds (3.56 carats) encrusting the iconic Chanel C’s set in 18-carat white gold. From the picture it doesn’t look too different from a classic Chanel bag (you’d think that the 334 diamonds would look shinier and more impressive ), except for the alligator texture. And personally, I don’t see the attraction of alligator skin. Admittedly, this one doesn’t look bad with its creamy color and the subtle texture. But in general, I don’t like alligator skins because it resembles too much the actual animal and that creeps be out no end.
Coming in second is the super luxe version of the Birkin, the “Crocodile Birkin” at $ 120,000USD. Similarly made of crocodile skin (I really don’t see the attraction with crocodiles), it too has a diamond encrusted clasp set in white gold. Though this time there are 10 carats. Hm…why is this less expensive than the Chanel one? Clearly this is the better bargain (if there is such thing as a bargain for such super luxe bags), especially since there are only 2 of them in the world. It wins hands down with size, rock and exclusivity!
